Signage Design Tips

Signage Design Tips

1 Compelling Colour
The colour you choose to use plays a big role in well designed signage. Think of the yellow in McDonalds or the red in Coca Cola, often colour can help you convey your brands identity.
Studies have shown that more or less 80% of the recognition of a trademark is because of its colour. Another factor to consider is trendy colours. Some business owners could feel compelled to convey their personality through their signs that use modern or current colours. But you should be careful with the longevity when designing your signage as today’s colour could be an eyesore tomorrow.
2 Contrast for readability
The contrast of your sign will usually determine its readability. Which is why contrast is such a big factor for an engaging sign.
Most signs will include either graphics or text in the foreground, with a noticeable background colour, the contrast between the two items is extremely important to the viewer’s retention of te content. You might want a dark colour on a light background, or the other way around. Pairing colours that are similar may decrease the sign’s readability.
However, if you have a weak colour contrast, it can be strengthened with a drop shadow around the foreground letting or an outline. By putting a border around the graphics or the text it can also increase reading speed.
3 Yes, the size matters
Basically, the bigger the letters, the easier it will be to read.. This is very important when designing roadside signage or signs that will be displayed at a distance.
Keep in mind that it should be 10 feet per inch of letter height. The different typefaces can also affect the legibility of the sign. While you might want a more flowery text in order to convey your specific style, it could be difficult for people to read over a distance or while driving in their cars.
